Schools Indoor Rowing Competition December 2011

Indoor Rowing Competition – 6th December

On the 6th December we held our first indoor rowing competition for our Try Rowing program held at Biddenham Upper School. The teams have been preparing for the multiple categories for the past few weeks and finally the day had arrived to test themselves against other schools from the borough.

The attending schools included Biddenham, St. Thomas More and Sharnbrook. Unfortunately Rushmoor had to withdraw at the last minute.

The event had categories ranging from individual challenges for year groups 9 to 11 as well as team races for age group and schools. The individual events saw a fairly even spread of the medals amongst the schools, however, the year group team relays saw Sharnbrook dominating the girl events and St. Thomas More dominating the boys.

One of the best performances of the afternoon has to go to Ross from Biddenham who won the year 11 boys individual event setting an impressive distance of 1677 meters in the 6 minutes. This is a gold medal percentage of 97.5%.

The New Year will see the introduction of a weekly rowing challenge for the schools with the aim of getting all the schools together at least once every half term. With the weekly challenges and the regular competition we should be able to get a competitive league up and running with the added potential of new schools joining the project also.

A good start to the schools involvement of 2011/12.
