Star Head January 2012

We held our rescheduled Head of the River Race on Sunday 22nd January 2012 after the orginal event in October was postponed due to heavy fog, with 10 Star Club crews wining.

Many clubs turned up to support the event and our home crews were successful in a number of categories.

These included the men's Elite coxed eight, stroked by Men's Captain Will Eason, who finished in an impressive time of 5.48mins which was the fastest of the day.

Eason then teamed up with fellow Senior men's squad member Alex Miller to win the Elite coxless pairs event in 6.54mins.

The men's squad was also victorious in the Senior coxless pairs with a time of 7.03mins and Club Captain Chris Callow winnin the Masters A singled sculls in a time of 7.43mins.

The Masters squads performed admirably aswell, with a mixed coxed Masters C/E four of Janet Tredget, Sue Lamb, Simon Clarke and Maurice Stanbridge won their category in 8.04mins.

The Junior Squad had a successful weekend recording five category wins as well some other strong performances.

The J18 boy’s quad of Patryk, Sam, Josh and Tom J had a successful day winning the J18 4x- by one second from King’s School Ely, they were also the fastest four of the day (6:40). The coaching teams performance of the weekend goes to William White and Tom Morgan, who posted the fastest doubles time of the day (7:12) in their J16 win. Will and Tom were backed up by the rest of the J16 squad, who secured second and third places in the event shutting out all visiting crews, these two crews combined to make up a Novice quad (Tony, Tom T, Tom C, Chris S) which they won in a very competitive time (6:52), giving the J18’s something to think about! Will also went on to win the J15 sculls race from a competitive field of eleven scullers, and posting a very competitive time (8:04) keeping the older members of the squad looking over their shoulders! Tom Morgan also gave the Juniors Squads new single its run down the course in the J16 event; he recorded the squads fastest scull time of the day (8:00) pushing out Tom Jacobs by one second (8:01).

The girls side of the squad had a mixed day of racing with variable conditions and traffic often determining the result rather than just the stopwatch, but that’s head racing. Becky Bennewith did manage to secure a win in the WJ17 sculls (8:28) and put in a good performance in her second row in the WJ18 sculls. Roxy and Ellie Bennewith joined forces to race the WJ16 2x, after a good row they were beaten by a solid performance from King’s School Ely. Finally, the youngest members of the squad took to the water in WJ14 4x+ and 2x’s. Even in the less than ideal conditions the girls got stuck in but were unfortunately beaten by a strong field of young junior girls.

The squad will be heading to Peterborough Head next weekend with a WIM3 4x- and J16 4x- in preparation for the fast approaching Schools Head.
